This photo is kind of stark. It was taken just as the street lights were coming on. I like the street lights in St. Paul except the 70′s style street light that shines in my bedroom window at night. They are taller and brighter than these but they don’t look nearly as charming. Most neighborhoods have returned to the old style lights like this one but not on my block.

Usually I shoot this scene at night or at dawn but this time it was about the light. It is a Winter sky which is kind of fun because I can shoot into the sun. The ice and snow in the air diffuses the light so the normal rules just don’t apply and there is little light and I need to find it where I can.

I have been doing some experimenting with lighting. I am a rookie at photography and most of the stuff I shoot is outside where there is light. I have been forced to learn something about lighting because of the interior shots that I take. I do alright with them if I take them during the day and use a tripod and a couple of flashes if I need them.

This photo was taken using a LCD flashlight that I attached to a small tripod with a strip of Velcro. It is kind of harsh but it does light the candy wrapper nicely and I will probably experiment with it some more because I like to experiment and that is the best way to learn.
