It rained and then the temperature dropped. That was a month ago but I am confident that the ice is still there under 30+ inches of snow.
Some people watch others skate and some people take photos of people watching people skate. There is skating in downtown St. Paul at the Landmark Center across the street from Rice Park. There is a warming house and skate rental too.
As part of the Saint Paul Winter Carnival there is an ice carving contest held in Rice Park downtown. They use chainsaws, ice picks, and blow torches to makes some amazing works of art. usually it is too cold when they are being carved and then a thaw the next day so they all melt and then back to the deep freeze.
The Saint Paul winter carnival starts this week. There is going to be a smallish ice castle in Rice Park. I watched them building it on Sunday. The weather has been downright balmy for January in Minnesota but it is cold enough to keep the ice blocks from melting.
Ice on the rocks along the North Shore of lake Superior. The water is always above freezing even when the land is bitterly cold.
The river doesn’t freeze solid in the winter and it is so quiet without the daily barge traffic. There is open water but shipping season is over because of the ice.
