A landmark that everyone shoots

Mickey's Diner

Mickey's Diner

You can find pictures of Mickey’s diner all over the internet. You can also find them in local gift shops and art galleries.  I have taken several of them myself and I even sold one.  This is my last shot of Mickey’s because it is the best one I have ever taken, and it is at least as good as one I saw for sale yesterday at a local art gallery.  I have shot it in daylight, and when it is pitch black out, when it is raining and even in the snow.   I guess I like this one becasue I can see people inside.  There are always people inside.  The lighting is OK and there is only so much you can do with composition when taking a shot of a rectangle up against a square.  I do have some shots from more creative angles but it is hard to tell that they are of the diner.

It doesn’t really make sense to take pictures of what everyone takes pictures of. There are enough pictures of Mickey’s already.    I think that will be my challenge in the new year, to find more new pictures.  There are many on this blog that are unique but also many that are fairly common. If the zillion and one photos of Mickey’s were all lined up this one would be better than about two thirds of them, and it is unlikely that I will ever shoot one that is better than ninety percent of them so what is the point?

Well, it may be a cliche, and it may be overdone, but it’s a St. Paul icon and I still enjoy all those photos of it that I see. Good one, indeed!
