Ugly, Interesting or Beautiful?
by Teresa Boardman on Feb.24, 2010, under Architecture, Buildings
Some say it is an ugly building, some say it is beautiful. I think it is interesting. It was built in 1992 and houses the Weisman museum on the University of Minnesota campus. The building is very well known and a favorite of local photographers. The best time to shoot it is probably at sunset but it is kind of interesting at dawn too, as it becomes what ever color the sky is. I make no apology for my messy verticals but plan to go back again for another try.
The University of Minnesota has it all for those who like to take architectural photos. There are very modern buildings and plenty of gems from the past. I keep promising myself that I will spend a day on campus when it is a bit warmer just to take pictures.

Great photo. At first I thought “whoa, where’s that”.. then realized I’ve seen it before. I guess this is a whole new view than what I am used to seeing.

Great photo. For me it is also interesting but moving to ugly side:-))) Everytime I see far from symmetrical buildings (too many of them in modern Moscow) I try to imagine the architect and his inspiration sourse

It is an art museum. It kind of looks like a sculpture. My husband says it is ugly. I think I will go with interesting.

My FAVORITE Twin City building!! I often go across from it on the Mississippi at different times of day to see the play of light on its facade. Beautiful. Gehry has to be the most imaginative contemporary architect. Am currently in Santa Fe, NM where one of the museums has an entire exhibit on current museum architecture throughout the world. It’s mesmerizing and, of course, Gehry is featured!

Kate – you picked a great time to be in New Mexico. It is two degrees here right now.

Asthetically, it is not beautiful. I’d need to see the interior to deem it interesting. At the structures level of ‘not beautiful’, one would hope that the exterior nuances were utilized for beauty on the interior.

Interesting building and great photo but claustrophobic in structural aesthetics (to me).
