I have more than a passing interest in historic homes. My own home was built in 1858 and is in the greek revivle style. The home in the photo is located in Irvine park on one of the nicest lots at the edge of the river bluff. Construction started in 1851, the home was completed in 1860, and then the facade was tweaked a bit in 1907. There are not many homes like these in the twin cities but some can be found around downtown St. Paul.

Hi, that is a beautiful house. I like the Greek revival style. I red something about it. Greek revival never took root in The Netherlands. There is a reason for that. In those days my country was very influenced by Reformed Protestant thought. Pillars as you see in your picture were seen as symbols of repression, of a human supremacy and vanity which was considered unsuited. It was also in a time when there was a wave of destruction of Middle age Catholic Churches, being too much of an abomination. However funny enough the only institutions which followed Greek revival were the Banks (in larger cities) and the Catholic Church which gained freedom of expression in the 1880′s. Before that time it was unofficial forbidden to be Catholic. In public life Catholic expressions of faith were not approved.
In 1880 a lot of Catholic churches were build, grand and proud and sometimes by Greek revival style which was not as popular anymore in that time. Creating a different type of buildings in the Dutch down to earth ‘cosy’ tradition of architecture.
In Utrecht there is an example of this type of architecture. I have tried to Google for it, but couldn’t find an picture. I will make a picture of it when I am there and send you a link… .:)
Thanks for the history. I love this kind of architecture and my own home is in the style but it is not nearly so ornate.
Again a beautifully coloured shot. Interesting history.

That’s a magnificent home! Not an architectural style I’m likely to see in Manila though.
I love the effect that you used on your photo! It looks almost like a painting.
Thanks. I used a little HDR, took advantage of the frosty early morning light.
